The first test of a drone taxi service in Dubai has officially taken place. The test was only for a 5-minute flight and it had been tested before in Germany, but a crown prince was on-hand, showing that there are high hopes for the technology in the country.

The drone is a two-seater designed by the German firm Volocopter that wants to have them going full speed ahead within 5 years. Their goal is to have them autonomously pick up and drop off people. The country clearly believes it will become a viable means of transportation. The day when you can order a drone trip via an app may not be too far away.

Dubai is fast becoming a hub for smart city projects, also recently launching their smart city security projects including Robocops. They even have a smart city index for projects.
